To help feed people in need this holiday season, Brookshire Grocery Co. donated 147 hams that will be distributed in El Dorado through the Salvation Army.

“Thanks to Brookshire’s, this opportunity of providing these hams will definitely provide for the community that we serve,” said Capt. Jason Perdieu of the El Dorado Salvation Army. “This is going to be focused on the Christmas Eve dinner that we’re doing.”

Both of the Brookshire Grocery Co. locations in El Dorado are donating Hormel Cure 81 hams to the El Dorado Salvation Army, totaling 147.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to be able to provide this to the Salvation Army,” said John Tomanio, store director of the Brookshire’s location on South West Avenue. “Two years ago we were able to do it and we were fortunate enough this year to be able to do it again.”

According to a news release, Hormel Foods and Brookshire Grocery Co. partnered to donate over $150,000 worth of Hormel Cure 81 hams to food banks throughout Brookshire’s market areas. The donation equals more than 15,000 hams.

The Hormel Cure 81 Hams for Hunger program originally began in 1989 by the makers of the ham. The news release stated that the program involves a partnership between Hormel Foods and grocery retailers across the country with more than $13 million in hams donated since its inception.

“We are very excited to partner with Hormel Foods and the Hormel Cure 81 brand to donate more than 15,000 hams to over 80 nonprofits that support hunger relief in communities that our stores serve,” said Brad Brookshire, Chairman and CEO for Brookshire Grocery Co. in a news release. “In our 90 years of operation, giving back to the communities that support our stores has always been very important to us. We are thrilled to be able to help provide hams for so many individuals in need this holiday season.”

Both Brookshire locations in El Dorado are also participating in a food drive for the Salvation Army, where shoppers can purchase a brown bag for $5 that will be donated to a family through the Salvation Army.
