Lady Bulldogs prepared for district tournament

- By Tony Burns Sports Editor

Strong stopped a two-game skid Thursday with a 70-56 win over McGehee in the regular-season finale. The Lady Bulldogs hope that’s enough momentum to get them going in this week’s district tournament.

Strong takes on Dermott Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The tournament will be held at Emerson.

The injury bug bit Strong hard this season and the Lady Bulldogs have struggled to an 8-10 record. Coach Jason Porter believes his team is ready to play its best basketball.

“We finally have everyone one-hundred percent healthy,” he said. “Played McGhee Thursday night and had the best game of the year. Dynasty (Davis) is almost back in shape and is looking good. Chrischunda Williams, my sixfoot post, had a big game against McGehee, scoring 22 points. Holly Baker and Daylan Howard have really came on in the last few games to solidify the inside and outside.”

Davis has had an injury-plagued junior campaign. Porter said the guard is averaging 26.8 points per game.

The Lady Bulldogs must beat Dermott to advance to the regional tournament. On the season, Strong lost to the Lady Rams 51-50 on Jan. 8 but won at Dermott 56-47 10 days later.

“They are big and fast. The key will be having someone other than Dynasty step up,” Porter said. “I have a feeling they will put two girls on her. We saw that some last year so we will have some sets ready for that. Making free throws will be a huge key as well. Dermott is aggressive but they tend to foul a lot.”
