Chamber to host two events
The El Dorado – Union County Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon cutting for La Hispana Taxes, located at 1229 W. Hillsboro, Tuesday at noon. The public is invited to attend.
The Chamber also will host a Business After Hours at the El Dorado Golf and Country Club Tuesday. The event will begin at 5 p.m. at the Country Club, located at 101 Shady Side St. The public is invited to attend. Cost is $5 and a business card.
Retired teachers association to meet Oct. 16
The Union County Retired Teachers Association will meet Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. The program will be a legislative update, presented by Carolyn Jones. Members are reminded to bring canned goods for IHS.
Interfaith Clinic Health Fair to be held Oct. 16
A public health fair will be held at Interfaith Clinic, located at 403 W. Oak St., on Wednesday, Oct. 16 from noon to 4 p.m. Sponsored by americares and Walgreens, the fair will include health tests, door prizes, snacks and giveaways. Attendees can receive information on uninsured care, mental health, women’s services, heart health and more. A Spanish translator and childcare will be available. Those qualifying as low-income will
be able to receive free flu shots with proof of income.
Area school board meetings announced
The El Dorado School Board will meet today, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. in the board room of the Administration Office, at 200 W. Oak St.
The Parkers Chapel School District board meeting has been rescheduled for Monday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. In the Administration Building; it was originally scheduled for today.
Waste pickups will be delayed on Friday
Union County Solid Waste will be closed Friday, Oct. 18. Friday’s waste pickups will be delayed until Monday, Oct. 21. Routes will be irregular the week of Oct. 21.
Library book sale starts tomorrow, runs until Oct. 19
Friends of Barton Library will hold a book sale Tuesday, Oct. 15
through Saturday, Oct. 19 at the library. Hours are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1-3 p.m. Saturday. Proceeds of the sale will be used to support Barton Library and its branches.
SAHRA to host lunch and learn this week
The South Arkansas Human Resources Association will host a lunch and learn event at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at the east campus of South Arkansas Community College. The event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided. Those interested are asked to RSVP to lisa.beaver@armtecdefense.com by Oct. 14.
The SHARE Foundation and Arkansas Community Correction will speak about the benefits of becoming a flexible hiring employer, including an overview of the program, information on Ban the Box Campaign, and tax benefits to those with flexible hiring practices. Employers who have successfully implemented flexible hiring practices will also speak.
Also discussed will be
an operator/assembler pre-apprenticeship program. The Department of Commerce, in partnership with Tooling USME and the University of Arkansas Fort Smith, have created an entry-level training program designed and validated by industry to convey essential skills required by employers when hiring entry-level employees. Training is delivered using online modules, classroom discussion and hands-on training. The program will be available through the community colleges in high-demand areas throughout the state.
Local contestant wins category in state pageant
MaKenna Safford of El Dorado won the Prettiest Eyes category in the Girls Pageant (age 7-8 division) at the 80th Arkansas State Fair in Little Rock. Safford was one of 11 winners from across the state. The Arkansas State Fair continues through Oct. 20 at the State Fairgrounds in Little Rock.
