Brumley authors no-hitter against Sheridan

- By Jason Avery News-Times Staff

Smackover standout Baylor Brumley made history on Sunday by throwing the second no-hitter since the El Dorado Oilers returned in a 1-0 win over Sheridan in the opener of a doubleheader at Junction City. Sheridan won the nightcap 5-4. Brumley, who improved his record to 3-1 and allowed only one baserunner to reach third base in the sixth, walked four and struck out nine while throwing 110 pitches.

Brumley's no-hitter is the first for the Oilers since Derek Jobe accomplished the feat against Hamburg on June 9, 2018.

However, Brumley didn't get a chance to celebrate it in traditional style, as the Oilers won the game in walk-off fashion.

With two outs, it looked like the game would be headed to extra innings, but the Oilers were able to manufacture the winning run.

Hunter Lawrence drew a fullcount walk, as did Ty Disotell to put runners at first and second.

A passed ball advanced the runners a base each, setting the stage for Jackson Cook.

Like Brumley, Cook was a senior at Smackover this past year, and he hit a 1-1 pitch straight into the ground roughly two feet in front of home plate.

Cook was able to beat the throw to first for an infield single, scoring Lawrence with the game-winning run and sealing Brumley's no-hitter.

“Baylor Brumley looked stellar on the mound,” Oilers coach Greg Harrison said. “He carried a presence that he was in control of every situation, from the first pitch all the way through the 110th pitch.

“Finishing three-up, threedown in three innings and only seeing five batters twice over the seven-inning contest, Sheridan certainly did not make it easy for him by working the count, getting him to average almost 16 pitches per inning.

“In this 98-degree heat, Baylor Brumley most certainly earned the recognition that he should receive for such an excellent performance. We needed every bit of that effort for the team to win. Every one of his teammates and coaches tip their hat to him.”

Lawrence was 1-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base and one run scored, while Gabe Richard was 1-for-3 with a stolen base and Jax Todd was 1-for-2 for the Oilers in the opener.

In the nightcap, the Oilers nearly erased a 5-1 deficit before coming up short in a five-inning contest.

The Oilers began to cut into Sheridan's lead in the fourth.

Lawrence singled to right-center with one out, and Josh

Saulsbury followed with a double off the rightfield fence to score Lawrence to make it 5-2.

In the fifth, Tanner McLelland led off with a base hit to left-center and stole second.

One out later, Rhett Richardson doubled down the right-field line to bring home McLelland to cut Sheridan's lead to 5-3.

With two outs, Tyler Johnson delivered an RBI single to left to score Richardson to bring the Oilers within a run, but that would be as close as the Oilers would get.

The Oilers took their lone lead of the game in the first.

With two outs, Richardson was hit by a pitch, and Braden Doherty walked to put runners at first and second.

Johnson then drilled a double to right-center to score Richardson with the first run of the game. The Oilers now had runners at second and third, but both would be stranded.

Johnson went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Oilers' attack.

Richardson was 1-for2 with a double, a walk and one RBI, while Saulsbury was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

McLelland was 1-for3 with a stolen base and one run scored, Lawrence was 1-for-2 with one run scored and Doherty was 1-for-2 with a walk in the contest.

Chase Brumley took the loss after allowing four hits and three runs in 1 2/3 innings.

He walked one and didn't record any strikeouts.

All three runs that Brumley (2-2) allowed were earned.

Disotell worked the final 3 1/3 innings in relief.

He allowed two hits and two runs with only one being earned. He walked one, struck out one and needed just seven pitches work a 1-2-3 fifth to give the Oilers an opportunity to cap their comeback with Doherty, Saulsbury and Richard making great plays defensively.

The Oilers (16-9, 4-6) will host Texarkana in a Zone 4 doubleheader tonight in Junction City.

Game time is set for 6 p.m.
