County tops 300 with 13 new COVID-19 cases

The Arkansas Department Health reported 13 new COVID-19 cases in Union County Saturday, bringing the county’s cumulative number of confirmed cases to 305.

The jump in cases is the third-largest single-day increase the county has seen yet and Saturday is the fourth time the number of new cases identified in the county has been two digits. New cases identified in Union County had remained below 10 since May 21 until Saturday.

Of the county’s confirmed cases, 244 were considered recovered Saturday, up two from Friday. There were 47 cases active on Saturday, up 11 from Friday. Active cases represente­d 14.4% of the total number of cases confirmed in the county on Saturday.

No new deaths resulting from COVID-19 were reported on Saturday.

Fourteen Union County residents have died as a result of the virus.

On Friday, Dr. Joe Thompson, President of the Arkansas Center for Health Improvemen­t, announced during a press conference with Governor Asa Hutchinson that the ACHI had made city-level COVID-19 data available to the public. The data is only current up to July 9, Thompson said, but the ACHI is working with the ADH to provide the data in a more timely manner as well as to differenti­ate active cases.

As of July 9, there had been 199 COVID-19 cases in El Dorado, representi­ng 1.13 infections per 100 residents; 12 cases in Strong, representi­ng 2.38 infections per 100 residents; 11 cases in Huttig, representi­ng 2.08 infections per 100 residents; and 19 cases in Junction City, representi­ng 3.63 cases per 100 residents, according to the ACHI. Only cities with more than 10 cases are included in the ACHI’s listing; the listing will be updated weekly, Thompson said.

The ADH reported 28 new negative test results returning from Union County Saturday, representi­ng a one-day local positivity rate of 31.70%. There have been 3,787 test results returned from Union County in all, with 3,482 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 8.75%. According to the ADH, there is a 9.5% testing rate for Union County residents.

Arkansas’ cumulative total of confirmed cases grew by 771 to reach 32,533 cases on Saturday. Of those, 25,292 were considered recovered, leaving 6,884 cases — 21.16% — active statewide.

Four Arkansans’ deaths resulting from the virus were reported Saturday, bringing the state’s death toll to 357, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.09%. An ADH spokespers­on said 453 Arkansans were hospitaliz­ed due to the virus on Saturday, with 97 on ventilator support.

Since Arkansas began testing for COVID-19, 419,171 tests have been reported to the ADH, with 386,683 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the state of 7.76%. There were 6,166 more test results reported Saturday than there were Friday, indicating a one-day positivity rate for the state of 12.50%.

Johns Hopkins University reported 3,676,942 COVID-19 cases in the United States at 5 p.m. Saturday. Of those, 1,107,204 were considered recovered, leaving 2,429,990 cases — 66.08% — active nationwide. There had been 139,748 deaths attributab­le to the virus by Saturday afternoon, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 3.8%.

Johns Hopkins reported 14,126,035 COVID-19 cases worldwide Saturday afternoon. Of those, 7,931,486 were considered recovered Saturday, leaving 5,596,451 cases — 39.61% — active around the world. There had been 598,098 deaths attributab­le to the virus by Saturday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 4.23%.

On Saturday, U.S. COVID-19 cases represente­d 26.02% of all cases worldwide. Active cases in the U.S. represente­d 43.42% of all active cases around the world. American deaths attributab­le to the virus represente­d 23.63% of all COVID-related deaths in the world.

Arkansas’ cases represente­d .88% of all COVID-19 cases in the U.S. Saturday. Active cases in Arkansas made up .28% of all active cases in the U.S. Arkansan deaths attributab­le to the virus represente­d .25% of all COVID-related deaths in the U.S.

COVID-19 cases in Union County made up .93% of Arkansas’ confirmed cumulative case total Saturday. Active cases in the county represente­d .68% of the state’s active cases. Union County residents who died as a result of the virus represente­d 3.92% of Arkansans who had died from the virus.
