How to Build a Girl
Johanna Morrigan (Feldstein) is an aspiring writer, but the 16-year-old feels trapped within the confines of her large family’s tiny apartment. When her father loses his disability benefits, Johanna summons up the courage to apply for a position as a rock critic at D&ME, a London music paper, in the hopes of bringing in some cash. Elated to have landed the job, she dyes her hair bright red, upgrades her style and adopts the pen name “Dolly Wilde.” She becomes enamored with the rock scene and falls deeper and deeper down a rabbit hole of sex, parties and rock ‘n’ roll that, while bringing her closer to her dreams, also pulls her away from friends and family. In the year 2038, George Almore (James) is nearing his goal of creating the world’s most advanced android, a side project he’s been working on while stationed alone at a secret base in the snowy mountains near Kyoto. He keeps company with two robots and his late wife, Jules (Martin), to whom he talks through the Archive, a device that allows temporary communication between the living and the dead. Unbeknownst to the company that runs Archive, George plans to break Jules out of the system and put her consciousness into his new android.
