The Smackover City Council met on Monday at City Hall.

The bulk of the meeting was devoted to the second reading of two proposed ordinances to close two alleys in the city. According to minutes from the July 13 meeting of the Smackover Zoning Board, petitions for the two closures were delivered to the Council by two city residents.

The Zoning Board went on to accept the petitions, and the first public reading of the ordinance was completed during the July City Council meeting.

The second reading of both ordinances was completed and approved

The third and final reading will take place during the September 14 Smackover City Council meeting.

Smackover Recorder/Treasurer Rick East said in a phone call following the meeting that both citizens brought the petitions seeking the alley closures to expand space for their own adjacent properties.

The first petition is from a resident seeking to expand into the space in which the alley is currently located, and the second resident is seeking to put a mobile home in the space, East said.

The July police activity report was also available in documents compiled by East.

Last month, the Smackover Police Department fielded 87 calls and compiled 14 misdemeanor and 13 felony incident reports, along with one accident report.

The department also conducted four misdemeanor and seven felony arrests; 1,275 security checks; 35 traffic stops; 24 traffic tickets; 28 warning tickets; nine alarm checks; 17 assists; and zero escorts.
