Three new cases reported in county

The Arkansas Department of Health reported three new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Union County Sunday, bringing the cumulative number of cases identified locally to 556.

Of those, 480 were considered recovered Sunday, up four from Saturday. Active cases dropped by one from Saturday to 56, representi­ng 10.07% of the cumulative number of cases in the county.

No new local deaths attributab­le to COVID-19 were reported Sunday. Twenty Union County residents have died as a result of the virus. The ADH reported 19 new negative test results returned from Union County Sunday, indicating a one-day local COVID positivity rate of 13.64% based on the number of new cases and results reported. In all, 6,620 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, with 6,064 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the county of 8.4%. Arkansas saw its number of cases rise by 673 to reach a cumulative total of 52,665. Of those, 45,572 were considered recovered, leaving 6,494 cases — 12.33% of the cumulative number of cases — active statewide.

The state subtracted one death from its total Sunday, bringing Arkansas’ COVID-related death toll to 599, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.37%. An ADH spokespers­on said the death that was subtracted was discovered to not be COVIDrelat­ed, and no deaths attributab­le to the virus were reported Sunday.

Hospitaliz­ations due to the virus increased by 14 Sunday, making 478 Arkansans who were hospitaliz­ed due to COVID19. The number of Arkansans on ventilator support increased by 12 Sunday to make 120 in all.

According to the ADH, 6,126 test results were returned between Saturday and Sunday, indicating a one-day positivity rate for the state of 10.99% based on the number of new cases and results reported. There have been 91,800 COVID-19 test

results returned so far in August. Governor Asa Hutchinson said it is his goal that the state process 300,000 tests this month; the state was just shy of his goal of 200,000 tests resulted in July.

Since the state began testing for COVID-19, 622,050 results have returned to the ADH, with 569,385 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the state of 8.5%.

Johns Hopkins University reported 5,396,782 COVID-19 cases in the United States at 4:45 p.m. Sunday. Of those, 1,818,527 were considered recovered, leaving 3,408,321 cases — 63.15% — active nationwide. There had been 169,934 deaths attributab­le to the virus in the U.S. by Sunday afternoon, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 3.15%.

Johns Hopkins reported 21,554,374 COVID-19 cases worldwide Sunday afternoon. Of those, 13,528,416 were considered recovered, leaving 7,253,160 cases — 33.65% — active around the world. There had been 772,798 deaths attributab­le to the virus by Sunday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 3.58%.
