Returning starters stepping up to lead Wildcats' defense

For the most part, defensive football practice doesn't really start until the shoulder pads are worn. El Dorado defensive coordinator Trey Outlaw has liked what his troops have shown over the past several practices since contact has begun.

“Really pleased with how we have looked the past couple of weeks,” he said. “Especially Friday, that was our best day yet. We had a slower whistle Friday which allowed our guys to really fly to the ball and really focus on taking the ball away via strips.”

As expected, returning junior starters, linebacker Jyrin Steward and cornerback Mario Ganter, have picked up where they left off a year ago. Wildcat coaches were hoping others would join the party and they have.

“Our two returning starters Jyrin and Mario have been lights' out, but we have had some pleasant surprises with newcomers like (noseguard) Hayden Owen and Javen White,” said Outlaw. “Neither were on the team last year but have had great springs. Both will either start or push for meaningful snaps this year.

“Kordarrion Dismuke got moved to corner last week and has been nothing short of perfect. The two guys we had position moves from offense have really been good moves for us so far with Pat (Sixbey) and Hollis (McCuien).

“Continuing our tradition from last year where we put a black jersey on guys who have earned it through their play and relentless pursuit of getting to the ball and forcing turnovers. We have awarded three guys with a black shirt so far, Jyrin, Mario, and Hayden Owen. Looking forward to having more guys earn a black shirt in the coming weeks.”

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, contact has been on a limited basis and even last week, the Wildcats didn't do much actual tackling to the ground. Outlaw said his defense has made the necessary adjustments and he isn't concerned about the lack of tackling during the preseason.

“Not worried about getting enough tackle work. This is how the game has transitioned with the focus on protecting our players from head injuries,” he answered. “We do tackle work and tackling fundamental work daily in individual drills, which allows us to be more controlled and get more reps.”

Practice will resume on Monday. Outlaw said the fundamentals will still be the primary focus on the field.

“The focus next week will be the same as the last week of the season. Alignment, running to the ball and when we get there, taking it away,” he said. “This is what we preach to our guys. Especially the taking the ball away portion.”
