17 new local COVID cases, another death, state officials report

The Arkansas Department of Health reported 17 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Union County Tuesday, bringing the cumulative number of cases identified locally to 578.

Another Union County resident’s death caused by the virus was also reported Tuesday. In all, 21 local residents have died as a result of the virus, indicating a local COVID mortality rate — the percentage of local residents who have contracted the virus and died as a result of it — of 3.63%.

Of the cumulative number of cases, 498 were considered recovered Tuesday, up 13 from Monday. The number of active cases in the county increased by three from Monday to reach 59 Tuesday. Active cases represente­d 10.21% of the cumulative number of cases reported in Union County Tuesday.

The ADH reported 75 new negative test results returned from Union County Tuesday. It is unclear whether all the new negatives were returned between Monday or Tuesday or if the number of negative test results for the county is still increasing due to the data cor

rection the ADH made over the weekend, as the numbers of negative test results have varied at both the state and local level.

The total number of test results returned each day is reported during Governor Asa Hutchinson’s daily COVID-19 updates, and the total number of test results returned since the state began testing for the virus is reported on the ADH’s COVID-19 dashboard.

In all, 6,819 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, with 6,241 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 8.48%.

Arkansas saw its number of COVID-19 cases grow by 410 Tuesday to reach 53,487. Of those, 46,970 were considered recovered, leaving 5,898 cases — 11.03% of the cumulative number of cases — active statewide.

The deaths of 16 Arkansans attributab­le to the virus were reported Tuesday, bringing the state’s death toll to 619, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.16%. Hospitaliz­ations in the state saw a net increase of six Arkansans hospitaliz­ed due to the virus, 492 in all. There were two more Arkansans on ventilator support Tuesday, 122 in all.

The ADH reported 4,675 new test results returned Tuesday, indicating a oneday positivity rate for the state of 8.78%. So far in August, 101,999 COVID-19 test results have returned to the ADH.

Since the state began testing for COVID-19, 636,730 results have been reported to the ADH, with 583,243 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the state of 8.4%.

At 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Johns Hopkins reported 5,480,487 COVID-19 cases in the United States. Of those, 1,898,159 were considered recovered, leaving 3,410,649 cases — 62.32% — active nationwide. There had been 171,679 deaths attributab­le to the virus in the U.S. by Tuesday evening, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 3.13%.

Johns Hopkins reported 21,991,954 COVID-19 cases worldwide Tuesday evening. Of those, 13,981,129 were considered recovered, leaving 7,233,807 cases — 32.89% — active around the world. There had been 777,018 deaths attributab­le to the virus by Tuesday evening, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 3.53%.
