Eight new COVID cases in county

The Arkansas Department of Health reported eight new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Union County Thursday, bringing the cumulative number of cases identified locally to 597.

The number of local recoveries increased by 12 to reach 518 Thursday, while active cases dropped by four to 58. Active cases represente­d 9.72% of the cumulative number of cases in the county Thursday.

No new local deaths attributab­le to COVID-19 were reported Thursday. Twenty-one Union County residents have died as a result of the virus.

The ADH reported 75 new negative test results returned from Union County Thursday, indicating a one-day local positivity rate of 9.64% based on the number of new cases and results reported. In all, 6,919 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, with 6,322 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 8.63%.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Arkansas grew by 549 to reach 54,765 Thursday. Of those, 48,458 were considered recovered, leaving

5,666 cases — 10.35% of the cumulative total — active statewide.

Ten Arkansans’ deaths that resulted from the virus were reported Thursday, bringing the state’s death toll to 641, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.17%. The number of Arkansans hospitaliz­ed due to the virus stayed steady at 499 Thursday, while the number of Arkansans on ventilator support decreased by six to 108.

The ADH reported 6,898 test results returned between Wednesday and Thursday, indicating a one-day positivity rate for the state of 7.96%. There have been 115,915 COVID-19 test results returned to the ADH so far in August, according to the agency.

Since the state began testing for

COVID-19, 648,509 result have returned to the ADH, with 593,744 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the state of 8.44%.

At 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Johns Hopkins University reported 5,571,102 COVID-19 cases in the United States. Of those, 1,925,049 were considered recovered, leaving 3,471,875 cases — 62.32% — active nationwide. There had been 174,178 deaths attributab­le to the virus in the U.S. by Thursday evening, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 3.13%.

Johns Hopkins reported 22,538,431 COVID-19 cases worldwide Thursday evening. Of those, 14,389,262 were considered recovered, leaving 7,358,694 cases — 32.65% — active around the world. There had been 790,475 deaths attributab­le to the virus by Thursday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 3.51%.
