Three new COVID-19 cases in Union County

The Arkansas Department of Health reported three new confirmed cases of COVID19 in Union County Wednesday, bringing the total number of cases identified locally to 653.

Of those, 564 were considered recovered, up five from Tuesday. Active cases decreased by one from Tuesday to 69; they represente­d 10.6% of the cumulative total of cases Wednesday.

The number of deaths resulting from COVID19 reported for Union County decreased by one from the number the ADH reported Tuesday; an ADH spokespers­on said it was likely the department discovered the death should have originally been attributed to another county. Twenty Union County residents have died as a result of the virus, instead of the 21 previously reported.

The ADH reported 132

new negative test results returned for Union County Wednesday, indicating a one-day local positivity rate of 2.22% based on the number of new cases and results reported. In all, 7,363 COVID-19 test results have returned for Union County, including 6,710 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the county of 8.9%.

Arkansas’ number of confirmed COVID-19 cases grew by 649 to reach a cumulative total of 58,023 Wednesday. Of those, 51,901 were considered recovered, leaving 5,390 cases — 9.3% of the cumulative total — active statewide.

The deaths of 21 Arkansans that resulted from COVID-19 were reported Wednesday, bringing the state’s death toll to 732, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.3%. The total number of Arkansans hospitaliz­ed due to the virus decreased by seven to reach 435, and the number of Arkansans on ventilator support stayed steady at 108.

The ADH reported 4,372 new test results returned Wednesday, indicating a one-day positivity rate for the state of 14.8% based on the number of new cases and results reported. So far in August, 148,620 COVID-19 test results have returned to the ADH.

Since the state began testing for COVID-19, 683,273 results have been reported to the ADH in all, including 625,250 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the state of 8.5%.

At 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, Johns Hopkins University reported 5,810,192 COVID-19 cases in the United States. Of those, 2,053,699 were considered recovered, leaving 3,577,183 cases — 61.6% — active nationwide. There had been 179,310 deaths attributab­le to the virus in the U.S. by Wednesday afternoon, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 3.1%.

Johns Hopkins reported 24,007,049 COVID-19 cases worldwide Wednesday afternoon. Of those, 15,634,412 were considered recovered, leaving 7,550,704 cases — 31.5% — active around the world. There had been 821,933 deaths attributab­le to the virus by Wednesday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 3.4%.
