The Norphlet City Council met on Monday, Dec. 14 for their final regular meeting of the year. The council moved on several business items, including approval of the 2021 budget and a project to repair water lines.

The meeting began with several department reports by Norphlet Mayor Jim Crotty.

For the Parks Department report, Crotty said the City Park is still under “limited use” restrictions due to COVID-19. He informed the council and attendees that a port-a-potty had been moved back to the park for joggers and others who use the park.

For the Streets Department report, Crotty said that the city is still waiting for response to a proposal concerning state street aid funding for paving portions of Baugh Street, North Texas Street and Carey Lane.

“I think we have a good chance to get [the funding], since it’s been two or three years since we’ve done it,” Crotty said.

Crotty added that the city could find out about the status of their proposal by February of next year and, if accepted, begin work as early as June.

Next, the council approved $5,000 for water line replacement on Yaeger Road in Norphlet. This amount was based on estimates procured by Crotty of approximately $2,600 for equipment costs and $2,300 for labor costs for the project.

Next, the council approved the city’s 2021 budget as well as a budget resolution later in the meeting.

Crotty also read a letter addressed to the council from the police department and chief, thanking the city for recent Christmas bonuses.

Crotty said the council approved $500 bonuses for personnel along with $50 bonuses for Norphlet Fire Department’s volunteer firefighters and part-time workers.

The next Norphlet City Council meeting will be on Monday, Jan. 11, 2021.
