Area women’s shelter planning garage sale

- By Becky Bell Special to the News-Times

A large indoor/outdoor garage sale is planned for the first weekend February to make money and clear out unneeded items from Compassion’s Foundation, Inc.

“The thing about a yard sale is it’s going to bring in cash that we need, and we have so many clothes,” Lacy Ogle, Compassion’s shelter manager, said.

The garage sale will be held at the administration office of Compassion’s on 549 Ruth in Magnolia, she said. This location is where all community donations are dropped off.

The women’s shelter gives donors an itemized receipt for their tax records. If the person making the donation does not want that, Compassion’s will still itemize the donation and keep it for their records.

Some members of the Compassion’s Foundation board of directors donated a bed frame and other large items. One citizen donated a Purple Mattress.

“It’s almost brand new; it’s king size and it’s so comfortable too,” Ogle said.

There will be a screen door, a storm dorm, purses, kitchen items and shoes sold in the sale, Ogle said.

Deb Martin, executive director of Compassion’s Foundation, said beginning in January, employees would start going through the clothing and separating it by size. When the sale time comes, shoppers will be able to go to different rooms based on if their clothing size.

“We would really like to have someone benefit with us benefiting too,” Martin said. “We have furniture sitting under the carport that we want to sell. We have a washer and a dryer for $400.

We have twin sized beds and possibly a bunk bed.”

Martin said people interested in the furniture items can make an offer before the garage sale in February, but clothing won’t be sold until the sale. Other furniture includes a couple of couches, a recliner and a love seat.

Martin said the clothing itself will only be gently used items and nothing with holes in it unless the garment is designed that way. Clothing with holes or stains or general wear will not be sold.

“The things we will sell will be good quality,” Martin said. “People give us their good things and we want to be able to give back.”

In the past, Compassion’s has given a lot of donations to the Columbia County Animal Protection Society (CCAPS) and has been glad to; but Martin said it occurred to them they might be able to make money on donations too.

“This could go for maintenance, a client’s prescription or deposits, rents for current clients who need help,” she said. “This would go in our unrestricted portion of the budget. We could spend it any way we feel necessary to spend it. Sometimes we don’t have the right sizes of underwear and sock. Sometimes a client needs a certain color of pants for work and the pants we have don’t fit. That helps them get that job and keep that job.”

Closer to time for the sale, the organization will make further announcements in local media and on Facebook. Martin said she would have to check with the city to see if they would need to get a business permit to have the sale.
