El Dorado set to host Maumelle

- By Tony Burns

El Dorado’s didn’t receive any early Christmas gifts, scheduleheading into the holiday.

The Lady Cats’ road schedule included trips to Bryant and Sylvan Hills.

El Dorado will return to Wildcat Arena tonight with another stern test in the form of Maumelle.

Varsity girls are scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. followed by varsity boys.

“They’re a really good team. They’re quick. They’re athletic and have some good shooters. It should be a good game,” said El Dorado coach Jae Kell.

The Lady Wildcats haven’t played since Dec. 22.

“We gave them a couple days off because of our Christmas dead period. Once that was over, we got back in the gym (Sunday night) and got some shots up. Today we worked on some more things and did some game planning.

“We’ll practice before the game and just go over some more final details.”

El Dorado’s offense has been sporadic at times this season but where Kell would love to find some consistency is on the defensive end of the floor.

“What I’m working on and what I want to focus on is our defensive performance. I want to have a better defensive performance out of a game. We’ve got to get our defense better than what it is right now,” said Kell, who has just one senior on the roster.

“We’ve got a lot of growing to do. We’re young, just a lot of growing to do. We’ve played some big schools. Hopefully our preseason has put us in a position to where we’ve grown throughout it and we can get into conference and play hard and will be competitive. That’s the goal.

“We’ve tried to play a tough preseason to get us ready for conference. Even though our record may not be where we want it right now, I’m hoping that being able to play those tough teams, we’ll be able to play our tough teams we have in conference.”
