County reports 4 new COVID cases; recoveries climb

Four new COVID-19 cases were reported in Union County Monday by the Arkansas Department of Health, bringing the cumulative total of cases identified locally to 3,180. The cases in the county Monday included 2,468 confirmed cases, up five from Sunday, and 712 probable cases, down one from Sunday.

An ADH spokespers­on previously said there are several reasons the number of probable cases may have fallen from the previous day’s report. The cases could have been moved to a different county, or they may have been confirmed with a PCR test.

The United States Centers for Disease Control considers positive results from PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests to be confirmed cases and positive results from antigen (rapid) tests to be probable cases.

Active cases dropped by 22 Monday down to 224; they represente­d 7% of all the cases identified locally and included 180 confirmed cases and 44 probable cases. There were 2,867 Union County residents considered recovered from

the virus Monday, up 26 from Sunday.

No new local deaths attributab­le to COVID-19 were reported Monday. Eighty-nine Union County residents have died as a result of the virus. There were 156 people hospitaliz­ed Monday due to the virus in the Southwest hospital region of the state, where Union County is located, including 52 in intensive care units and 22 on ventilator support.

The ADH reported 185 new negative test results returned from Union County Monday. In all, 25,650 COVID-19 test results have returned from

Union County, including 22,470 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate of 12.4%.

In Arkansas, 636 new COVID-19 cases were reported Monday, bringing the cumulative total of cases identified in the state to 284,702. The cases in the state included 228,410 confirmed cases, up 583 from Sunday, and 56,292 probable cases, up 54 from Sunday.

Active cases in the state fell by 1,603 Monday to reach 17,792 cases; they represente­d 6.2% of the cases identified in Arkansas and included 12,921 confirmed cases and 4,871 probable cases. There were 262,229 Arkansans were considered recovered from the virus Monday, up 2,195 from Sunday.

The deaths of 44 Arkansans that resulted from COVID-19 were reported Monday, bringing the state’s death toll to 4,650, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.6%. There were 1,084 Arkansans hospitaliz­ed due to the virus Monday, including 336 in ICUs and 187 on ventilator support.

The ADH reported 6,843 new COVID-19 test results returned Monday and 326,397 tests performed so far in January. Since the state began testing for the virus, 2,695,958 results have returned to the ADH, including 2,401,372 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate of 10.6%.

Since Dec. 14, approximat­ely 221,602 doses of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccines have been administer­ed in Arkansas; the state has received 386,750 doses.

At 3 p.m. Monday, Johns Hopkins University reported 25,217,690 COVID-19 cases in the United States. There wasn’t data available then on the number of U.S. residents considered recovered from the virus or the number of active cases in the country. There had been 420,267 deaths attributab­le to the virus in the U.S. by Monday night, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 1.7%.

Johns Hopkins reported 99,547,547 COVID-19 cases worldwide Monday afternoon. There were 54,904,316 people considered recovered from the virus then, leaving 42,507,534 cases — 42.7% — active around the world. There had been 2,135,697 deaths attributab­le to the virus by Monday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 2.1%.
