19 new local COVID cases reported as active cases creep up

There were 19 new COVID-19 cases added Saturday to Union County’s cumulative total of cases, which reached 3,776, according to the Arkansas Department of Health.

The cases in the county Saturday included 2,860 confirmed cases, up two from Friday, and 916 probable cases, up 17 from Saturday. The United States Centers for Disease Control considers positive results from PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests to be confirmed cases and positive results from antigen (rapid) tests to be probable cases.

Since last Sunday, 68 COVID-19 cases have been recorded in Union County.

Active cases grew Sunday by one to reach 50; they represente­d 1.3% of all the cases identified locally and included 40 confirmed cases and 10 probable cases.

The number of active cases in the county this week has fluctuated between a high of 50, recorded last Sunday, Monday and yesterday, and a low of 37 cases, reported Tuesday.

There were 3,625 Union County residents considered recovered from the virus Saturday, up 18 from Friday. Since last Sunday, 67 local residents have met the criteria for recovery.

No new local deaths caused by the virus were reported Saturday. A total of 101 Union County residents have died as a result of the

virus, including one this week. As of Sunday, the mortality rate of COVID-19 in the county, or the percentage of people who died after contractin­g COVID, was 2.7%.

In the Southwest hospital region of the state, where Union County sits, there were 43 people hospitaliz­ed due to the virus Saturday, including 19 in intensive care units and seven on ventilator support. Hospitaliz­ations in the region have declined since Sunday, while ICU population and ventilator usage numbers have fluctuated.

The ADH reported 20 new COVID-19 test results returned from Union County Saturday. Since last Sunday, 439 results have returned from the county, indicating a seven day average positivity rate of 15.5%. An average of 85 tests returned each day last week from Union County.

In all, 30,201 results have returned from Union County, including 26,425 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 12.5%.

Arkansas added 327 new COVID-19 cases Saturday to its cumulative total, which reached 324,653. The cases in the state included 255,613 confirmed cases, up 248 from Friday, and 69,040 probable cases, up 79 from Friday.

Since last Sunday, 2,238 COVID cases have been identified in Arkansas.

The number of active cases in the state fell by 136 Saturday to reach 4,160; they represente­d 1.3% of all the cases identified in Arkansas and included 2,961 confirmed cases and 1,199 probable cases. Statewide, the number of active cases has fluctuated, from a high recorded last Sunday of 4,399 to the low reported Saturday.

There were 315,181 Arkansans considered recovered from the virus Saturday, up 449 from Friday. There have been 2,423 Arkansans who met the criteria for recovery this week.

The deaths of 14 Arkansans that resulted from COVID-19 were reported Saturday, bringing the state’s death toll to 5,297, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.6%. Since last Sunday, 54 Arkansans’ deaths that were caused by COVID have been reported.

There were 345 Arkansans hospitaliz­ed Saturday due to the virus, including 148 in ICUs and 75 on ventilator support.

Since the state began testing for the virus, 3,213,025 results have returned to the ADH, including 2,875,656 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the state of 10.1%.

At 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Johns Hopkins reported 28,926,677 COVID-19 cases in the United States. Data wasn’t available then on the number of U.S. residents considered recovered from the virus or the number of active cases in the country. There had been 523,495 deaths attributab­le to the virus reported in the U.S. by Saturday afternoon, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 1.8%.

Johns Hopkins reported 116,348,940 COVID-19 cases worldwide Saturday afternoon. There were 65,755,881 people considered recovered from the virus then, leaving 48,009,033 cases — 41.3% — active around the world. There had been 2,584,026 deaths attributab­le to the virus reported by Saturday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 2.2%.

Since last Sunday, approximat­ely 332,357 COVID-19 cases have been identified in the U.S. and about 10,443 U.S. residents’ deaths resulting from the virus have been recorded. Worldwide, approximat­ely 2,362,623 COVID cases were identified and about 55,033 COVID-related deaths have been recorded.
