County’s COVID tally tops 3,800

39 new cases reported Wednesday

There were 39 new COVID-19 cases reported Wednesday in Union County by the Arkansas Department of Health, bringing the cumulative total of cases identified locally to 3,837.

The cases in the county Wednesday included 2,878 confirmed cases, up nine from Tuesday, and 959 probable cases, up 30 from Tuesday. The

United States Centers for Disease Control considers positive results from PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests to be confirmed cases and positive results from antigen (rapid) tests to be probable cases.

Active cases rose by seven Wednesday to reach 51; they represente­d 1.3% of all the cases identified locally and included 34 confirmed cases and 17 probable cases. There were 3,685 Union County residents considered recovered from the virus Wednesday, up 32 from Tuesday.

By Tuesday afternoon, 86,015 COVID-19 vaccine doses had been administer­ed in the Southwest hospital region of Arkansas, where Union County sits. According to the ADH, 9.6% of people in the region were fully vaccinated, while 17.3% had received their first dose of a vaccine.

There were 34 people hospitaliz­ed due to the virus Wednesday in the Southwest hospital region, including 20 in intensive care units and nine on ventilator support.

No new local deaths caused by COVID-19 were reported Wednesday. A total of 101 Union County residents have died as a result of the virus.

The ADH reported 22 new negative COVID-19 test results returned Wednesday. In total, 30,507 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, including 26,670 negatives, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 12.6%.

Arkansas added 317 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday to its cumulative total, which reached 325,700. The cases in the state included 256,269 confirmed cases, up 192 from Tuesday, and 69,431 probable cases, up 125 from Tuesday.

The number of active cases in the state dropped by 234 Wednesday to reach 3,227; they represente­d 1% of all the cases identified in Arkansas and included 2,332 confirmed cases and 895 probable cases. There were 317,070 Arkansans considered recovered from the virus Wednesday, up 526 from Tuesday.

The deaths of 25 Arkansans that resulted from COVID-19 were reported Wednesday, bringing the state’s death toll to 5,382, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.7%. There were 301 Arkansans hospitaliz­ed Wednesday due to the virus, including 128 in ICUs and 72 on ventilator support.

As of Wednesday, the state had received 1,297,880 COVID-19 vaccine doses and 771,876 had been administer­ed.

Since the state began testing for the virus, 3,238,779 results have returned to the ADH, including 2,900,373 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the state of 10.1%.

At 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, Johns Hopkins University reported 29,136,600 COVID-19 cases in the United States. Data wasn’t available then on the number of U.S. residents considered recovered from the virus or the number of active cases in the country. There had been 528,603 deaths attributab­le to the virus reported by Wednesday afternoon, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 1.8%.

Johns Hopkins reported 117,845,876 COVID19 cases worldwide Wednesday afternoon. There were 66,784,879 people considered recovered from the virus then, leaving 48,445,807 cases — 41.1% — active. There had been 2,615,190 deaths attributab­le to the virus reported by Wednesday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 2.2%.
