Brumley hurls Buckaroos to victory at Drew Central

- News-Times Staff

MONTICELLO - Earlier this week, Smackover's Chase Brumley struck out 12 en route to a three-hitter in a win at Parkers Chapel.

For an encore, the junior tossed his second complete game of the week, finishing with a seven-hitter to lift the Bucks past Drew Central 6-3 in their 6-3A opener on Friday.

Brumley didn't issue any walks against the Trojans, and he continued to be stingy in that regard by issuing just one walk against the Pirates.

He struck out four.

The Bucks (5-2, 1-0), who won their fifth straight on Friday and squared off against Maumelle in Saturday's final at the Bauxite Tournament, pulled away methodically, scoring one run in the first, two in the second, one in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.

Drew Central scored twice in the sixth to make it 5-3, but the Bucks gave Brumley some breathing room with a run in the seventh to make the final margin.

The Bucks had nine hits in the win, and they got a major boost from the bottom of their lineup.

Devan Lofton, Jax Todd and Maddox Gottberg, who hit seventh, eighth and ninth respectively, went a combined 4-for-10 with three runs scored and two RBIs in the win.

Gottberg himself was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Lofton and Todd each had doubles serving as their hits in the win with the former collecting an RBI and the latter scoring one run.

Trace Davis also had a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, one run scored and one RBI.

Bailey Rivers, Sawyer Cropper and Jacob Eubanks each had one hit with Cropper's hit being a double.

Cropper had an RBI, while Rivers and Eubanks each scored one run.

Smackover will be on the road to start next week, as the Bucks head to Junction City on Tuesday for a showdown between Union County rivals.
