Parkers Chapel looking forward to the future

- By Tony Burns Sports Editor

One of the slogans for Parkers Chapel’s girls’ basketball team during the 2020-2021 season was “Together We Win.”

Years from now, the players can come together at the class reunion and say, “Together We Won.”

The Lady Trojans didn’t win a state championship. They lost in the opening round to Acorn 45-39, after spotting their opponents a 16-point advantage.

Parkers Chapel rallied and even took the lead in the fourth quarter. But the season would eventually end, leaving the seniors to ponder, not only what could have been, but also what they did accomplish.

“It was a great season, especially … we didn’t even know if we were going to make it to the end,” said PC coach Justin Welch. “It seemed like every week it was like it’s going to end. It’s going to end. It was a very challenging season, but these girls stepped up and performed really well. I couldn’t be happier with them and excited about the future, too.”

The Lady Trojans claimed a regular-season conference co-championship and won the 2A South Regional title.

Welch will say goodbye to a senior class that finally broke through and made it to the state tournament.

Three freshmen moved up and got a taste of what postseason basketball is about. They will join their fellow classmates and several underclassmen in hopes of keeping PC’s success going.

“I know these juniors are going to step up and be good leaders for me next year and the whole group of freshmen are moving up. I’m really excited about it,” said Welch.

“The thing about life is, everything comes to an end. But with every ending, there’s usually a beginning. We love and respect the seniors and we’re going to miss them truly. But the next girls are up. We’re going to try to keep the momentum going and keep getting this program better.”
