Major Ronald Wayne Culver Hero 5K Run/Walk starts this morning

The Major Ronald Wayne Culver Hero 5K Run/Walk starts at 7:30 a.m., kicking off the annual SouthArk Foundation Outdoor Expo.

Culver, 44, was killed in action on May 24, 2010, in Numaniyah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device struck the vehicle in which he was riding as part of a convoy that was heading back to his base. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard. He was an employee of AmerCable and a community volunteer.

Sept. 11 memorial ceremony today

A ceremony commemorat­ing the 20th anniversar­y of the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States will be held today at 9:30 a.m. at the Arkansas 9/11 Memorial, located El Dorado Conference Center on the South Arkansas Community College West Campus.

The program is open to the public.

El Dorado 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb today

The El Dorado 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, coordinat ed by the El Dorado Fire Department and El Dorado Profession­al Firefighte­rs Local 1074, in conjunctio­n with the National Fallen Firefighte­rs Foundation, will begin today at 11 a.m. at the Union County Courthouse.

The event is being held to pay tribute to the firefight ers, law enforcemen­t officers, emergency medical tech nicians/ paramedics and military personnel who died in or while responding to terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington D.C., and Shanksvill­e, Pennsylvan­ia.

Participan­ts will take 1,980 steps on the two flights of stairs between the first and third floors of the court house to recreate a climb of 110 stories firefighte­rs and other first responders made at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Climbers will be able to select and wear badges with the names and photos of firefighte­rs, law enforcemen­t officers and emergency medical tech nicians/paramedics who died in the attacks.

Outdoor Expo today

The SouthArk Foundation Outdoor Expo will be held from 7:30 a.m. to about 4 p.m.

Activities that will be hosted at the Outdoor Expo include a BB gun shooting range, archery, lawn a bal loon toss and KidsWorld. Exhibits will include chainsaw carving, a car show, a magic show, Smokey the Bear and a live baby alligator. Vendors will be selling duck calls, sportswear, riding lawn mowers, fishing equip ment and other products. Food trucks will also be on hand, offering everything from barbecue, fried fish, chicken wings, hamburgers and hot dogs to vegan options, shaved ice and kettle corn, among other things. 7he :ithroZ Family CooN oII Zill also see com petitors offering food for sale. Several musical acts will also perform throughout the day, including Jason D. Williams, the Aces Wild Band and the Randall Lawson Band.

Activities at the event will include a pancake break fast, bouncy houses, temporary tattoo parlor, princess nail salon, crafts, character entertainm­ent, photos and more.
