Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday

- MATTHEW HUTCHESON NEWS EDITOR

The time of year to roll back the clocks is nearly here again.

Early tomorrow morning at 2 a.m., clocks nationwide will fall back one hour to 1 a.m., returning to standard time for the winter months and allowing for more daylight in the morning until Daylight Saving Time returns in March.

Federal law oversees how time changes work in the United States. A bill proposed by Sen. Marco Rubio (R- FL) called the Sunshine Protection Act and aimed at making Daylight Saving Time permanent passed in the U.S. Senate in 2022 but stalled in the House of Representatives.

According to a recent NPR report, the bill was reintroduced by Rubio in March and was sent to the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, where it has remained since.

Nineteen states across the country have passed legislation to change over to permanent Daylight Saving Time, though this could only happen if a bill allowing it, such as the Sunshine Protection Act, passed federally.

In Arkansas, a bill proposed by state

Rep. Johnny Rye (RTrumann) in Dec.

2022 to make Daylight Saving Time permanent was recommended for study in the State Agency and Governmental Affairs Committee and was withdrawn by the author in January, according to state Legislature records.

A bill was also proposed by Rep. Stephen Meeks (R-Greenbriar) in March to make Standard Time permanent in the state; this bill was voted down.

The News-Times reached out to Speaker of the House Rep. Matthew Shepherd (R- El Dorado) asking his opinion on making Daylight Saving

Time permanent and did not receive a response by press time Friday.

Nationwide, Americans appear to generally support ending time changes.

In a YouGov poll conducted in March, 61% of the 1,000 U.S. adult respondents said they would prefer to end clock changes, while 21% said they would not and 17% said they were not sure. Half of the respondents said they would prefer permanent Daylight Saving Time and 31% said they would prefer permanent Standard Time.
