Racer dies in crash at speedway in Virginia

A driver died Saturday night in a crash during a race at Langley Speedway, officials at the Virginia short track said.

Driver Shawn Balluzzo, who was 64, died following a crash during the second of two Modified Division races, the speedway said in a statement. The Virginian-Pilot reported Balluzzo was the winningest driver in the history of the track.

“He won the hearts of our fans with 11 track championsh­ips and a driving style that made him one of the most respected competitor­s we’ve ever known,” the statement said.

Balluzzo’s death was the first at the track in a racing-related accident since 2004, the newspaper reported.

Balluzzo won 16 of 17 division races in 2019.

Felix Rosenqvist overtook Pato O’Ward on the next-to-last lap and earned his first career win in the second half of an IndyCar doublehead­er at Road America. Rosenqvist became only the second driver to win an IndyCar event this year after Dixon posted three straight victories to start the year.

Rosenqvist and Dixon, who finished 12th, are Chip Ganassi Racing teammates.

BOY, 12, ARRESTED AFTER PALACE PLAYER ZAHA GETS RACIST POSTS » A 12-year-old boy was arrested by police after Crystal Palace player Wilfried Zaha highlighte­d racist abuse he received ahead of a Premier League match at Aston Villa.

The racist messages and images referenced the Ivory Coast internatio­nal being Black and showed the Ku Klux Klan. They were sent on Instagram from a user who referenced central England-based club Villa in their name.

“We were alerted to a series of racist messages sent to a footballer today and after looking into them and conducting checks, we have arrested a boy,” West Midlands Police said on Twitter. “The 12-year-old from Solihull has been taken to custody. Thanks to everyone who raised it. Racism won’t be tolerated.”

TWO-TIME ALL-STAR BOLLING DIES, HIT LAST SLAM OFF KOUFAX » Frank Bolling, a two-time AllStar second baseman and the last player to hit a grand slam off Sandy Koufax, has died. He was 88.

Bolling died Saturday. He was diagnosed with cancer about five years ago, according to a notice posted by the funeral home handling the arrangemen­ts.

Bolling played 12 seasons in the majors, six with Detroit and six with the Braves, and hit .254 with 106 home runs.
