Jimmy G could play, but Thomas, Bosa out

- Sports » B1

Coach Kyle Shanahan left open the possibility that Jimmy Garoppolo could play through a highankle sprain when the San Francisco 49ers return to MetLife Stadium’s suspect field Sunday.

Shanahan is not as optimistic about a slew of other injured 49ers.

Complicating the review process is that a truck equipped with an MRI machine broke down on the way Sunday night to the 49ers’ encampment at The Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia, where they’re practicing this week after Sunday’s 31-13 win over the host New York Jets.

Speaking of travel woes, the 49ers’ trip Friday to New Jersey got delayed when their plane got hit and dented on the tarmac by airport workers, prompting them to shift their flight out of San Francisco for a six-hour delay, Shanahan revealed.

Here are Shanahan’s injury updates via a video call with Bay Area media:

RUNNING BACK RAHEEM MOSTERT (KNEE SPRAIN) » He is “likely out” this week because of damage to his medial collateral ligament. The team’s top rusher also will take a

sabbatical this week from practice to attend the birth of his second son in the Cleveland area. “Hopefully it works out for him and he can make it (there). We’ll do whatever we can to help him out,” Shanahan said. DEFENSIVE END NICK BOSA (LEFT KNEE) » MRI results on Monday afternoon confirmed the 49ers’ belief that an anterior cruciate ligament tear will rob them of the reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year for the rest of the season. DEFENSIVE TACKLE SOLOMON THOMAS (LEFT KNEE) » His MRI results also confirmed an ACL tear, which occurred two plays after

Bosa’s. He will miss the rest of the season.

GAROPPOLO (RIGHT ANKLE) » “We’ll see how that goes this week. He does still have a chance, because the severity is not real bad. But it is a high ankle,” said Shanahan. (Normally, a high ankle sprain sidelines NFL players at least four weeks.) RUNNING BACK TEVIN COLEMAN (KNEE) » Shanahan termed it a knee sprain and the 49ers are waiting to learn more about it. TIGHT END GEORGE KITTLE (LEFT KNEE) » He did not play Sunday and will be reevaluated Wednesday. MetLife Field’s problematic field conditions, in the 49ers’ vast opinions, could factor into delaying his return until the following week.

DEFENSIVE END DEE FORD

(BACK) » Originally cast as neck spasms last Thursday, Shahanan said Ford actually has a back issue, upon further medical review. That sounds serious and last Sunday’s game likely will not be the only one he misses.

LINEBACKER DRE GREENLAW (THIGH) » He sustained a contusion upon colliding with teammate Azeez AlShaair on kickoff coverage. CORNERBACK JASON VERRETT (HAMSTRING) » He is expected to practice Wednesday after missing the past two games.

WIDE RECEIVER DEEBO SAMUEL (FOOT) » Can come off injured reserve next week for his season debut, after lingering pain in his surgically repaired left foot shelved him before the opener.

CORNERBACK RICHARD SHERMAN (CALF) » He must sit out at least two more games with what the 49ers say is a calf issue than anything related to his previous Achilles surgery.

WIDE RECEIVER RICHIE JAMES (HAMSTRING) » He went on injured reserve last week and must miss at least two more games. CENTER WESTON RICHBURG (KNEE) » He is out at least four more weeks on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

DEFENSIVE END RONALD BLAIR (KNEE) » He is out at least four more weeks on the physically-unable-toperform list.

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN JULLIAN TAYLOR (KNEE) » He is out at least four more weeks on the physicallyunable-to-perform list.
