It’s too soon for in-person classes

-

As your former Butte County Superintendent of Schools it is my responsibility to speak out on the subject of returning our students to in- class instruction. As a parent, former teacher, principal, county superintendent and grandparent I understand all of the reasons students need to be in school.

However, at this time and under the present situation with COVID-19, I will be the first to object to students returning to in- class instruction. I would also be the last to have my name on any document, school board minutes or decision to allow students, teachers or staff to return. One only needs to see what has happened throughout the country, with very well-meaning decisions, to see the unsuccessful result of such rash decisions. To know even one student in my care has died would be tragic and unthinkable.

I have been with my grandchildren during their on-line instruction. Obviously, it is different. However, the teaching and instruction is not only effective, but done in the most professional and responsible manner. Not being great at technology I was curious, but very impressed with the total instructional process. Moreover, students were totally engaged.

I do not believe this is the time to return our students and staff to a situation that jeopardizes their health, safety and perhaps their lives. Eventually, the time will come when we can return to what has been and is one one the best educational systems in the world.

Until that time, in all good conscience, I cannot sign on.
