Maderos wins club title for 22nd time

- Ed Anderson

Debbie Maderos won the Butte Creek Women’s Club Championship for the 22nd time, a record that may outlive the ages, but it was definitely not a cakewalk this time around.

Susan Martellaro, the club champion two years ago, gave Maderos all she could handle in the final round of the three- days of competition. After the first day, Martellaro was up by two strokes. The second day, Maderos was up by six strokes. It came down to the final hole on the third day and Maderos made par on the 18th hole to edge out Martellaro by two strokes to take the title for a total of 254. Jeanie Lowe was low net in the championship flight with a score of 226. Martellaro claimed the second spot with a net score of 232.

Sandy Fortino repeated her 2019 winning performance in the second flight to take the gross title with a score of 180. The top net finishers in the second flight were: 1, Joye Smith, 147; 2, Joan Bequette, 155, cardoff; 3, Sherian Hornbeak, 155.

The Table Mountain Women’s Golf Club played a game called “Mutt & Jeff” for its weekly tournament.

The par 3 holes, par 5 holes and one par 4 hole, were counted, and the players subtracted one-half of their handicap.

First flight game: 1, Kris McGee, 30; 2, Sherry Sue, 32.5, card- off; 3, Candy Parkison, 32.5; 4, Janett Ott, 34. Bidwell Park GC

The El Rancho Chico Golf Club held a two-man, blind draw tournament and there were lots of payoffs places, indicating there was a large field of players.

The Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club held an

“Any Nine” tournament for its weekly game. The players could choose any nine holes to count for the game, prior to teeing off at the beginning the tournament.

First flight low gross and low net was Shelley Carney, 76/71. Wow, Carney is a 5 handicap at Canyon Oaks. Awesome! First flight game: 1, Sally Pearson, 28; 2, Carney, 29.5; 3, Cynthia Paulo, 30. Second flight low gross and low net: Gina Davis, 92/72. Game: 1, Pam Coleman, 25.5. 2, Joan

Wagoner, 27.5; 3 Jakki Thomas….. hooray! Closest to pin on No. 14: 1, Fran Wedow; 2, Konnie Marskey. The players made a total of 9 birdies on the day.

Junior Golf

Isabella Morelock shot a one-under par score of 71, in the 12-14 age division, to tie for 3rd in a First Tee Junior Tournament at Haggin Oaks GC in Sacramento last Saturday.

Andrew Ma tied for 3rd in the boys 12-13 age division with a score of 78. His younger brother, Tommy, took 6th, onestroke back at 79.

The following day, on Sunday, in a U.S. Kids sponsored tournament, Morelock took third with a score of 74, and Morgan Pittman tied for 4th with a score of 77. A great showing for these up and coming promising players.

Spectacular shots

Steve Personett recently made an eagle 3 on the

par 5, 5th hole at Canyon Oaks. Witnessing Personett’s 120-yard, 9-iron approach shot disappear into the cup was his wife, Libbey, along with Steve Piluso and Mario Sagastumi.

Chuck Hodel recorded an eagle 3 on the par 5, 9th hole at Butte Creek from 120 yards out. Witnessing Hodel’s punch shot under the guardian oak tree in front of the green, finding the bottom of the cup, were his playing partners, Erv Alves, Tom Beckman, Jim Gaumer and John Olsen.

Another up and coming junior player, Jordon Boles, chalked up his first career hole-in- one on the 3rd hole at Butte Creek recently. Attesting to Boles’ perfect 154yard, 8-iron tee shot were two other outstanding junior players, Matt Sayer and Isabelle Hallin. I’m sure there will be plenty of aces in the future for all three of these talented players.

Commentary

Thanking those of you who diligently submit your club’s results to me on a timely basis is long overdue. I rely on receiving your results before Sunday afternoon in order to submit the golf column into the Enterprise-Record Sunday evening. This allows the E-R sports staff ample time to budget the space for the Tuesday edition. For instance, Jakki Thomas submits the Canyon Oaks Women’s results to me on a regular basis and always includes some antidotes and related statistics pertinent to the weekly game. Her personal comments definitely help me to add a little dialog about the tournament.

Thank you all, You all are very much appreciated!
