CHICO » A man who reportedly brandished a knife and threatened people was shot and killed Wednesday night by Chico Police Department officers responding to the call.
The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
Around 7:30 p.m., the Chico Police Dispatch Center received multiple 9-1-1 calls from people at Community Park on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway who described a white male in his 30s brandishing a knife. Chico police officers searched for the subject at the scene, before receiving additional calls saying the man had moved near the intersection of East 20th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway.
People reported the man damaged their cars with a knife. Officers then located the man at Petco, near the corner of the intersection, and determined he was “actively causing a disturbance,” according to a Chico Police Department press release.

As of Thursday morning, the crime scene had been cleared and the parking lot sat mostly empty. A sign on Petco’s storefront said the business would remain closed on Thursday as a result of the shooting.
