Second man pleads guilty to shooting gun in Oroville neighborhood

- Staff reports

OROVILLE » A second man pleaded as charged to an August shooting in a south Oroville neighborhood, Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said in a press release .

Brendon Lariviere, 27, of Oroville, pleaded guilty in the Butte County Superior Court on Wednesday to discharge of a firearm with gross negligence and possession of a firearm by a felon.

The plea came after Jesse Sweeney, 22, formerly of Berry Creek, pled guilty last week to discharging of a firearm with gross negligence and possession of a firearm by a felon for the Aug. 28 shooting, in addition to fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s motor vehicle while driving recklessly, and driving under the influence of alcohol for the 12-mile pursuit on Sept. 6.

Gunshots were heard and reported on Aug. 28 in the area of Spencer and Mesa avenues, and more were later reported on D Street, Ramsey said. No one was injured in the shooting.

Oroville police officers responding to these locations say they observed a speeding black sedan believed to have been involved in the shootings. After the vehicle failed to pull over when officers attempted a traffic stop, a two-mile chase ensued. Officers lost sight of the vehicle briefly before finding it abandoned at the intersection of Bird and Sixth streets. The female was later found on Bird Street and arrested.

On the same street, Lariviere was found hiding behind trash cans and Sweeney was found hiding in the area of Bird Street with a 9 mm semi- automatic handgun nearby. Officers found several casings back at the scene of the shooting matching the 9 mm semiautomatic handgun. A bullet hole was also found in a vehicle in the neighborhood.

Lariviere, who remains in custody, will be sentenced on Nov. 10. He faces up to three years and eight months in California State Prison. Sweeney will be sentenced on Nov. 4. The female, who has yet to be named by the DA’s office, faces several charges and has a preliminary hearing set for Oct. 28.
