Opposed to reopening of CUSD schools Court action would endanger women’s rights

-

As retired CUSD teachers and as parents of a current CUSD teacher, we are definitely not in favor of resuming in-person instruction on all CUSD campuses on October 19. Based on what science is telling America about this virus, CSUC and Butte College and many other wise schools do not plan to return to in-person instruction for the remainder of this semester. We fear that the CUSD Board is making their decision based on pressure from parents and other political forces, and not on science. We urge them to reconsider this dangerous decision.

The appointment of the right wing religious, antifeminist Supreme Court nominee, Amy Coney Barrett, will inflict decades of damage to the nation by completing a conservative SCOTUS majority. Of concern is Amy Barrett’s long association with a cult of the fringe Indiana religious Christian sect of predominantly Catholics (People of Praise) which opposes abortion, gay rights, and marriage equality, and supports male superiority over females.

Being Catholic is of no concern, 24% of the nation follows the Catholic faith. Joe Biden is a devout Catholic as is Justice Sotomayor and four conservative justices currently on the court including Chief Justice John Roberts. The concern is the ultra- conservative People of Praise and their influence that Barrett would bring to the court.

This potential conservative court would be lined up to kill health care (ACA) a fervent wish of long-standing for Republicans; remove protections for people with preexisting conditions (COVID has already infected over 6 million Americans who have tested positive and now have a pre- existing condition); and for tens of millions of others who will lose their Affordable Care Act Health Insurance.

The court will potentially take away personal and health rights for women by killing Roe vs. Wade, putting women in the back seat once again as far as their health, politics, and roles in society and the workplace go.
