‘Mulligan at the Creek’ draws large turnout

- Ed Anderson

The COVID19 issues prompted the Butte Creek Country Club to forego its Annual Men’s Invitational Tournament, so the golf shop staff, using a little ingenuity, came up with a format they called, “Mulligan at the Creek.”

The format was a two-man best ball, played over any two out of three days, similar to the regular invitational, but without the formalities, dinners, etc. and requiring tee times in lieu of the normal shotgun start.

The team of Chris Scarff and Mike Zadra won the net category in the first flight with a total score of 205, by a whopping 10 strokes, and also took second low gross in the process at 229. The team of Ben Knight and Nick Green, switched roles with Scarff and Zadra, winning low gross at 215 and took second low net, also at 215, via a card- off. Taking third, both in the gross and net categories was the team of Ryan O’Donnell and

Sam Higgins with scores of 230 and 215. Rounding out the net winners in the first flight were: 4, Larry Spencer and John MacTavish, 217; 5, Rob Sylvester and Lloyd Hightower, 218, via card-off; 6, RoyalHawkley and Kevin Parrish, 218.

In the second flight, the team of George Boelman and Rich Boelman won the net title, via a card-off over the team of Mike Sisney and Jon Voigt, when both teams came in with a score of 216. Sisney and Voigt also took second in the gross category at 249. The team of Rick Sufuentes and Mike Janke won the overall gross category at 246, and also took third low net at 217. Justin Bowman and John Barroso shot a net 226 to finish in the fourth position. Rounding out the net winners for the fifth spot was the team of Nick Andrew

and Peter Durfee at 227. The team of Bob Leckinger and Taylor Wallace claimed the third spot in the gross category at 256.

Spectacular shots

Denny Varley chalked up his 10th ace last week at Butte Creek. Varley selected his 5 hybrid for his perfect 124-yard tee shot on the third hole. Maybe not “perfect”, but it looks good on the score card. Attesting to Varley getting his holes-in-one tally into double figures were Lou Sanchez, Art Gausemel and TomBeckman. I can never get my name in the paper with that group… go figure.
