League of Women Voters condemns LaMalfa act

-

The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization dedicated to the defense of democracy and the right of all legal voters to have their votes counted. Members of our local League of Women Voters of Butte County spend countless hours each year distributing voter registration information and helping register eligible voters in support of that mission. We do this for all citizens regardless of political affiliation.

The November 2020 election was the most secure election in American history. Unproven statements and resulting actions by elected officials have a cost to our democracy; they disenfranchise voters and undermine the critical work of elections administrators. Disinformation erodes the foundation of our democracy, and we expect all elected officials to be stewards of democracy. Actions taken by U.S. Representative Doug LaMalfa (California District 1) in supporting a lawsuit before the United States Supreme Court to invalidate millions of votes and voting against acceptance of certified electors in the U.S. House of Representatives are reprehensible. If they had been successful, those actions would have disenfranchised millions of voters, interfered with the democratic process, and threatened American democracy.

The League, of which I am president, does not oppose or endorse political parties or candidates and very rarely comments on the official acts of an elected official, but this is an extraordinary case because of the threat it poses to the core institutions of our democracy. The League of Women Voters of Butte County strongly condemns these actions by Representative LaMalfa.
