LOIS IRENE KLOSS

-

1930 - 2021

Lois Kloss passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 27 at age 91. She was born in Pittsburg, Pensylvania, to Albert and Twila Deverts, where she had many aunts, uncles and cousins. Lois moved with her parents to New York at age 11. At age 21, Lois married Martin Agerholm, and the couple moved to southern California, where Martin worked as an electrical engineer for defense contractors. They had five children – Sharon, Christine, Marilyn, Carl and Eric.

The family enjoyed many wonderful vacations, camping in every national park west of the Mississippi River, and camping on the beach in Mexico, plus ski vacations over Christmas. The Agerholm house was like a community center, and kids from all over the neighborhood would go there to play.

In 1973, Martin and Lois bought a motel in South Lake Tahoe, where Carl and Eric attended high school. Sadly, Martin died of a heart attack when he was only 55 years old and Lois was 48. Lois then moved to Chico in 1980, to live near her daughter, Marilyn, and Marilyn’s husband, Joe Hoag. Lois married Vern Kloss of Durham in 1984.

In 1992 Lois bought the yellow and white house across the Esplanade from the Bidwell Mansion and opened The Esplanade Bed and Breakfast, which she ran with George Fish for 13 years. When Lois reached age 75 and George was 84, running the B&B had become too much work, so they changed it to a boarding house.

Lois is survived by her five children, by Christine’s husband (Dick Nelson), Eric’s wife (Mandy Agerholm), her six grandchildren (Susan Pasarow, Natalie Hoag, Nick Hoag, Katie Hoag, Karly Agerholm, and Kelsey Agerholm Miller, and also Kelsey’s husband, John Miller), as well as her two great-grandsons (Wyatt Hoag and Nyjah Haskins), and also her very dear cousins in Pittsburg, especially June and Herb Zierenburg . Many people remember Lois as a lady of kindness and generosity who loved and enjoyed people of all walks of life. A memorial service will be held for Lois on Saturday, Nov. 13, at her house, 620 Esplanade. We wish to thank the lovely people at the Country House for the wonderful care they provided to Lois in her last month here on earth.
