Ornaments made from Honey Run bridge for sale

CHICO » The Honey Run Covered Bridge Association is going to host its third annual holiday sale.

The fundraiser event is going to be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4 and 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, Dec. 5 at Chico True Value Hardware store on 230 W. East Ave. in Chico.

This year, the holiday sale will feature Christmas ornaments made from covered bridge debris and metal from the covered bridge, nails recovered from the fire that are going to be decorated, photo prints, original paintings and the featured item is going to be a sculpture. All of the items to be sold are made by local artists.

Vice President of the Honey Run Covered Bridge Association Walt Schafer said previous holiday sales didn’t include photographs or original paintings. The photograph prints will range from $25 to $300. The sculpture is also going to be featured at the holiday sale for the first time.

“The Christmas ornaments are small, metal hearts,” Schafer said. “We thought they were going to be all gone. But we were able to have more made. “

Schafer said the Christmas ornaments have always been a top selling item. He said that two years ago there were people lined up around the block just to get these ornaments which have become something of a collector’s item.

The featured sculpture was made by two local artists, Zeke Lunder and Jeb Sisk and will be auctioned off. It is 6 feet tall and 46 inches wide. The sculpture was made from debris and metal that was recovered from the covered bridge. The starting bid for the sculpture is going to be $25,000. A portion of the revenue will be going to the Honey Run Covered Bridge rebuild.

The Honey Run Covered Bridge Association hopes that the sculpture will be purchased to appear in either a local business or a public place.

In addition to all of the ornaments, photos, paintings and the sculpture that will be sold, there will be a drawing for a barbecue that has been donated from True Value.
