Love, murder fill the stage in CRT’s new production at new location

- By Verda Mackay

Does falling love always end up in marriage? Or does it begin a questionable road to murder? Answers to these thoughts are covered in the uproarious comedy, “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” at California Regional Theater’s recently opened First Street Theater, 139 W. First Street, Chico on June 3-19.

CRT’s producer Bob Maness has a talented cast for this Tony awardwinning romp with unforgettable music. Director Marina Kalani, music director Duncan Krummel and choreographer Lexi Eckland present this show with lots of hilarity.

“‘A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder’ is a mix of music, melodrama, fun, frolic and a touch of intrigue,” director Kalani explained. “It’s a modern take on operetta, but with a current sense of humor. The hero is the villain and the victims elicit little sympathy. So, you find yourself cheering him on despite the growing body count.

“Over the course of two hours,” she said, ” the stage morphs into over a dozen locations from a street in London to the Great Hall of a castle. The nine person cast portray nearly 50 personalities. Stunning vocal performances, cleaver lyrics, and fastpaced fun make this show an utter delight!”

This musical comedy won four Tony awards for its Broadway production in June, 2014, including Best Musical.

It is the funny story of Montague “Monty” Navarro, portrayed by CRT actor Michael Burchett. Monty is an heir to a family fortune. He sets out to jump the line of succession by eliminating the eight pesky relatives who stand in his way. And what about love? Murder isn’t the only thing on his mind.

Others in this memorable cast include Talia Rempel as Sibella Hallward, Monty’s love interest. Lexi Eckland portrays Phoebe D’Ysquith, and Denver Nash plays many roles in the D’Ysquith Family.

The ensemble includes Brooke Sundahl, Courtney Barnett, Cathy Kohler, Dan Duret and Leroy Christopherson.

Tickets for this unusual musical which is suitable for all ages are $35.00 with senior and group discounts available. For tickets and information www. crtshows.com.
