Fairview, Oakdale schools send off class of 2022
CHICO » It was a day of pomp and circumstance Thursday for the graduates of Fairview High School and Oakdale School.
A little over 90 graduates received their diplomas at DeGarmo park.
Fairvew graduate Daniel Guido smiled widely prior to the ceremony as he talked about his high school years.
“I’m excited and sad to see it go,” Guido said.
Guido is taking a year off to work before he attends college next year. Currently he works in the back at 5th Street Steakhouse in Chico.
Parents talked about how proud and happy they were to see their children graduate.
Jackie Maclean was extremely proud of her son, Garrett Walker, a Fairview graduate. Maclean said her son is planning to attend Butte College and then transfer to a trade school. He is also thinking about moving to Santa Cruz.
“I’m so excited for him,” Maclean said. “I’m so proud. He went on such a journey after he went to rehabilitation for drug addiction. We didn’t think he’d be graduating.”
Cheryl Turri smiled widely as she sung the praises of her son, Domenic Turri, a Fairview graduate. She said her son won a couple of scholarships and was awarded the Presidential Gold Award.
“He’s come a long way,” Turri said. “I never thought he’d graduate. We’re planning to have a party after this at his dad’s house.”
Cheryl Turri said Domenic Turri plans to attend Butte College and study kinesiology. “I’m very emotional. This is a good feeling. I’m very proud of him,” Cheryl Turri said.
Four student speakers spoke encouraging words to the crowd and her fellow graduates. One of them, Emily Olivarez, talked about how lucky she was to graduate.
“My parents were unable to finish high school,” Olivarez said. “I thank them for the gift of life.”
Olivarez’s advice to her fellow graduates was “show up, be cool and take care of business.”
Principal Andrew Moll praised the class of 2022.
“You are simply remarkable,” he said. “In the road ahead you must have resilience. Keep pushing forward and remember you are incredible people.”
