Two-hundred and seventy Las Plumas High School graduates received their diplomas Thursday night after a challenging four years.

“There’s a lot of mixed emotions tonight,” graduate Anton Johnson said. “I’m glad to be graduating but at the same time I feel like I didn’t have enough high school.”

This sentiment was echoed by many of the graduates that night as they waited anxiously to walk across the field to receive their diplomas.

Valedictorian Alanah Hancock was excited to leave high school and pursue her dream of becoming a psychiatrist after experiencing mental health issues during the pandemic. Like many others, she had experienced high school through a hybrid of online-learning and partially inperson classes.

“I think it will be really beneficial to my community,” Hancock said. “School during this time was a crazy experience but I feel like I learned a lot and I grew a lot as a person.”

Alondra Jauregui sat with the rest of her large family to watch her younger sister graduate. They all held large signs with her face on it so that she could see them in the crowd.

“To me, she’s always going to be that 11-year-old girl,” Jauregui said. “Watching her grow the last four years has been really eye opening.”

Las Plumas High School principal Dr. Lamar Collins sent off the graduating class with a message.

“The question is not can you be successful, the question is not is there greatness in you. The question is no do you have a bright future,” he said. “The question is will you unlock the greatness that’s in you and allow the world to benefit from the brightness emanating from you.”
