LIGHT ELECTION TURNOUT NOT UNUSUAL

Ballot drop off boxes open until 8 p.m.

- By Kimberly Morales

OROVILLE » After a month since the first ballot drop box locations opened for the statewide direct primary elections, Butte County had received 20% of ballots back by Monday, said Butte County Clerk Recorder Candace Grubbs.

“We’ve been really light, but that doesn’t seem to be unusual,” said Grubbs. “It’s going to be a light election.”

Waiting to vote by mail can be tricky, in comparison to voting by drop box or at a voters assistance center, said Grubbs. Mail in Chico gets sent to Sacramento to get postmarked before returning back to the city to be counted.

Congress District 1

Incumbent Doug LaMalfa (RRichvale) is running against Max Steiner (D-Chico) and independent candidate Rose Penelope Yee for the congressional office that holds several Northern California counties such as Butte, Tehama and Plumas counties. The top two vote getters move on to the general election in November. The seat is up for elections every two years.

Assembly District 3

David Leon Zink (D-Magalia) is running against incumbent James Gallagher (R-Yuba City) for the District 3 seat which holds a significant portion of the Sacramento Valley including most of Butte County and all of Glenn, Yuba and Tehama counties. The top two vote getters will race again in November during the general election. The seat is up for elections every two years.

Butte County Supervisor District 3

The assessor will identify taxable property and assign the taxable value. If neither candidate receives 50% of the vote, the three will face a runoff election in November.
