People join Butte County Sheriff Office by ‘running with the law’

- By Kimberly Morales

CHICO » Nearly 200 people from three years old to 90 years old bought a ticket to take part in either a one-mile or a 5K marathon hosted by the Butte County Correctional Officers’ Association on Saturday, June 18.

Racers started their run or walk at 8 a.m. at Lower Bidwell Park, where afterward, they were served breakfast by the Capt. Bob Pancake Wagon and walk through a showing of a range of Butte County Sheriff’s Office vehicles parked by Caper Acres.

Of the nearly 200 people who bought tickets to participate in the race, 130 joined the race during its take-off, said Correctional Deputy Kyle Fontes, who was handing out wooden medallions to finishers with Kristi Meyer and Brian Meyer.

The race is in its fourth year, said President of the Butte County Correctional Officers’ Association Jed Hancock.

“We really enjoy it,” said Hancock. “Hopefully, throughout the next couple of years, we can make it bigger and a little more entertaining. We have some things in the works to get more things that the kids can play with.”

Michael Price chose to participate in the 5K marathon for the first time while racing in an inmate Halloween costume.

“In my head, I like to pretend that instead of running with the law, I’m running away from them,” said Price. “So, it kind of gives me more motivation.
