Here comes the NIMBYs
California is a homeownership disaster, with the most recent data showing barely half (55.3%) of homes are owner-occupied. The numbers in Chico are worse: 45.6%.
Chico is not building housing needed to meet demand, a problem that has existed for decades and driven costs to unprecedented levels. The pandemic has exacerbated the problem, especially for young adults trapped by rising rents.
We have a chance to improve things, but here come NIMBYs trying to stop a proposed housing development on Chico’s eastern border. NIMBYs are working to kill the project by falsely claiming it is a fire hazard, crime generator, climate destroyer and overall threat to our quality of life.
Enough.
These arguments aren’t new. NIMBYs have been making them for decades. The claims are unfounded, ignore facts and cannot be allowed to continue. We’re running off Chico natives who deserve the same opportunity their elders had: to live and work in Chico and build a sound future here.
Check out the facts of Valley’s Edge, the development under attack. This thoughtful proposal has benefits that include much-needed housing and 50% of land dedicated to open space, parks, and recreation areas.
I was born in Chico in 1950, and 72 years later, Chico is still a great place to live. Valley’s Edge is being battered by misinformation and fear tactics. The right way to address this problem is with good planning and vision. Please look at this project in a positive and proactive way and not be taken in by a NIMBY point of view. — David Cox, Chico
