Gridley opens in shutout victory

Pleasant Valley teams win in football, tennis, volleyball, field hockey

Sophomore quarterbac­k Gus Stogsdill led the Gridley High Bulldogs on the ground and in the air in a 20-0 season-opening home win over Wheatland.

Stogsdill, a sophomore, ran for 99 yards on 18 carries and completed 8-of-10 passes for 82 yards. Andrew Engelmann led the Bulldogs with four catches for 40 yards.

On defense seniors Luis Corona and Jimmy Kelly led with five tackles each, and Andrew Engelmann had one sacks and two forced fumbles, and Angel Castaneda had a 68-yard intercepti­on returned for a touchdown.

Gridley (1-0) will play next at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Marysville.

PLEASANT VALLEY 31, YUBA CITY 15 >>

The Vikings won at Yuba City on Friday to move their record to 2-0, while the Honkers fell to 0-3. No other stats were provided. PV opens its home schedule Friday night against Las Plumas (0-1) at 7:30 p.m. LP lost its season-opener to Enterprise, 48-12. No stats were provided for that contest either.

ORLAND 16, WEST VALLEY 13 >>

The Trojans won for the second straight week, this time winning at West Valley. Grant Foster led the way by running for 88 yards on 18 carries and one touchdown. Alex Martinez added 58 yards on nine carries.

The Trojans are on a bye next week, and West Valley (0-1) plays at Shasta.

Davis Long ran for 180 yards on 18 carries and one touchdown as Biggs moved to 1-2 on the season.
