SoCal to host all 15 divisions

- By Darren Sabedra and Joseph Dycus

There will be no high school football state championship games in Northern California this season.

The California Interscholastic Federation announced on Tuesday that all 15 state championship bowl games will be played at community colleges in Southern California on Dec. 8-9.

The host schools will be

El Camino College in Torrance, Pasadena City College and Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.

Saddleback has played host to the five upper-division state title games the past two seasons, including Serra’s losses to Mater Dei/Santa Ana in 2021 and St. John Bosco/Bellflower in 2022.

With the upper-division games in the South, the remaining divisions had been held at home sites in the North. Bellarmine and

Santa Teresa, for instance, played state title games in San Jose last fall.

When the upper-division games were played at Sacramento State, the lowerdivision games were held at home sites in the South.

Brian Seymour, the CIF’s associate executive director, told the Bay Area News Group on Wednesday that the agreement with the three Southern California community colleges is for one season.

“This is the jumpingoff stage,” Seymour said. “We’re trying something new. We are going to go with this format for this particular year. Then we’ll re-evaluate and see how it goes.”

The North could potentially host the games in future seasons, Seymour said, before adding, “For this year, I think we have to find out what are the pros and cons. After we go through it, then we can kind of move forward from that point.”
