NEWSPAPER AND MAGAZINE COVERAGE OF THE CIVIL WAR
The talented Alfred Waud, pictured here, was Harper’s primary wartime field illustrator. This 1863 photo shows him on an army-issue horse and reveals him to have been a typical civilian rider—with hunched posture he sits a chair seat, a far cry from the “schooled” seat typical of army officers of the day.
A Brady assistant captured this photo of the sketch artist working in the field, 1863. Waud is striking a pose, of course, since candid “snapshots” were not possible. This panorama, drawn by Alfred’s brother William Waud, was printed in an 1865 issue of Harper’s Weekly. The caption read: “Sherman’s March Through South Carolina—Burning of McPhersonville— February 1, 1865.”
