IMPORTANT OUTCROSS STALLIONS: THE BOLD VENTURE FAMILY

-

Bold Venture (1933) is by St. Germans of the Isinglass sire-line, out of Possible by Ultimus, a sire-line descendant of Himyar, with tail female tracing to the elegant Glencoe and the redoubtable and durable Sir Archy. Bold Venture is the sire of 1946 Triple Crown winner Assault (out of Igual, a mare bred by Bob Kleberg from Incandescent by *Chicle) as well as King Ranch bred 1950 Kentucky Derby and Belmont winner Middleground. On the Quarter Horse side, Bold Venture also sired several mares essential to Kleberg’s breeding program.

Miss Princess, a.k.a. “Woven Web,” foaled in 1943, is one of Bold Venture’s daughters who had a performance rather than a breeding career. The photo demonstrates that very fast horses do not have to be tall. Miss Princess represents one of the last examples of the false papering of Quarter Horses to make them eligible to run in designated sprints at Thoroughbred tracks; she ruled the short tracks from 1945 to 1948, and at one time held most of the records from 300 to 440 yards. Her dam was Bruja out of Chicaro’s Hallie by the King Ranch Thoroughbred Chicaro. Miss Princess’ tail-female does not, however, actually go through Lady Eloise as per her “Thoroughbred” papers but rather Ada Jones by Little Joe. Note the “skunk” tail so typical of the Traveler-Little Joe bloodline.

Depth Charge (1941) is out of Quickly by Haste, a sire-line descendant of the Thoroughbred foundation horse Herod. Depth Charge’s speed as well as his breeding completely contradict the current fashion, which demands Thoroughbreds exclusively from the Eclipse family. Quickly is out of Stephanie, a paternal granddaughter of The Tetrarch, also a Herod-line sire. Moreover, on both sides of the pedigree Stephanie’s tail-female goes to West Australian and the rare and valuable foundation sire Matchem. Depth Charge is a maternal half-brother to Triple Crown winner Count Fleet and paternal half-brother to Assault. An example of the horse breeder’s art at its finest, this horse shows how Bob Kleberg used Thoroughbred stallions to great effect in breeding both Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses.
