F-100 Two-Barrel Install
FITECH FUEL INJECTION IS ONE OF THE industry’s top companies for supplying fuel injection to our classic trucks. Here, we’re bringing you an easy DIY on one of the products that will easily enhance the drivability and performance of your classic truck without any major modifications. Best part is you can install it yourself at home, with no special tools needed.
FThe FiTech Go EFI two-barrel system is good for most six- and eight-cylinder motors up to 400hp. It uses the Holley 2300 bolt pattern, which is the same that Ford uses. We truly love the fact that this upgrade puts an end to cold start issues, hesitations, vapor lock and flooding. This system gives you both impressive looks and performance, delivering that old-school carburetor look but with EFI technology and reliability.
Some of the system’s features start with the high-flow aluminum throttle body in a classic carburetor gold finish. The system includes four FiTech flow matched injectors capable of up to 400hp. It has both fan control and A/C input, which kicks up the idle, and also has a self-learning technology for wide range superfast dial in correction. The ECU is mounted to the throttle body for a clean install and has an internal fuel pressure regulator, which eliminates the hassle of needing to plumb an external fuel pressure regulator that comes preset to 58.5 PSI. The system also accepts
many common 5 1/8-inch OEM or aftermarket air cleaners. The self-tuning ECU is one of the most user-friendly features and allows for setup tuning with no computer necessary. A wideband O2 sensor with mounting kit provides real-time fuel MAP learning. Last but not least, it needs only four wiring connections: pump, key, power and tach.
With all of that packed into this little box, it is most certainly one of the best bangs for the buck. This does require you to set up an EFI-capable gas tank and pump, or you can do what we did and use the FiTech Force Fuel system, which is an external fuel pump system. It’s fed by the factory mechanical fuel pump and then converts it to high pressure for the EFI system. We don’t cover too much of the Force Fuel here, but you can visit www.FiTechEFI.com for more info.
We are installing this GO EFI 2-Barrel 400hp system on a ‘61 Ford F-100 with a 292ci Y-block, which is bone stock. Tools required for the installation are simple: a standard and metric wrench set, factory service manual for your vehicle, #2 Phillips screwdriver, terminal crimping tool, standard and metric Allen wrench sets, and a digital voltmeter. FiTech highly recommends that you verify the solid operating condition of the engine before making the jump to EFI. A carburetor can typically be looked at as the main cause for a number of other possible engine difficulties and gremlins. Therefore, it is recommended to check and ensure that there are no vacuum leaks, the ignition timing is set properly, and the engine is mechanically sound. If your engine has preexisting and underlying issues, converting to EFI will not cure them. The FiTech Go EFI two-barrel system requires a fuel pump operating at 58 psi, so ensure the pump and hose are EFI rated when selecting the fuel delivery system.
The Go EFI system highly depends on a clean and constant voltage source. Please ensure when grounding the system that it is a clean and solid ground. There are not too many things to wire up, but make sure you follow the instructions provided: power/ground, ignition, tach and fuel pump, along with the fed wire for the handheld controller. Once complete, we primed the fuel system and turned ignition on to go through the settings on the controller. Lastly, we fired up the system and, with the selflearning, it was a breeze. After the engine is warmed up, check the idle speed. Double check all fasteners, clamps and electrical connections to ensure they are all secure, and you’re on your way!
