Garden hacks that save you money

-

“I have a few plants that require extra water attention—and this gets tricky if I’m away or busy,” says gardening expert Shawna Coronado, author of 101 Organic Gardening

Hacks. Her fix: a wine-bottle watering system. To do: Grab a wine bottle and dig a hole (about the length and width of the bottle’s neck) next to the plant, taking care not to disturb the roots. Water the soil, then fill the bottle with water and flip it over, inserting the neck into the soil. (Optional: For added stability, pop bottles in terra-cotta stakes, available at garden centers.) “It works with a trickle-down principle, which allows the bottle to deliver a slow stream of water to the plant’s root system,” explains Coronado. “Plus, it keeps plants hydrated for up to four days, so you can skip the sprinkler.”
