A warm sip

-

“My 13-year-old contracted something last winter that gave her a bellyache with vomiting, so I used something my mom used when I was a child: ginger ale,” says mother-of-two Angela Hollis, M.D., area medical director for MedExpress Urgent Care in Mars, Pennsylvania. Why it works: Ginger boasts compounds that soothe an upset stomach. “While the actual amount of ginger in the soda may be small, the carbonation can calm an upset stomach,” says Dr. Hollis. She makes sure the soda is warm and her daughter takes small sips. “Very cold drinks can cause the stomach to cramp, and when you drink too fast, your stomach fills up, which can trigger more vomiting,” says Dr. Hollis, who adds that her daughter started feeling better in 30 minutes.
