Located in the sparkling Caribbean Sea just north of Venezuela lies the beautiful island of Grenada. Known as the “Island of Spice” for its thriving plantations, Grenada’s warm tropical breezes are filled with the scents of vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. It also boasts more than 40 white-sand beaches, breathtaking waterfalls and a historic 18th-century harbor capital, making it the perfect place to get away from it all.

Begin your getaway by soaking up the sun on the 2-mile-long Grand Anse Beach, a favorite on the island for its dining options, water sports and marvelous views. “A great long, white sandy beach with lots of palm trees that provide enough shade for everyone,” says a reviewer from California. “There are also several restaurants along the shore but the best by far are the local women who sell delicious sorbet. Don’t miss out!”

To see what awaits you below the water, book a snorkeling tour with Grenada Seafaris ($75 per person) to explore Moliniere Bay. Says Michael and Miran on TripAdvisor.com, “The underwater sculpture park is really unique and an important effort for developing healthy reefs.”

After you towel off, head to Palm Tree Gardens—a two-acre botanical garden that’s home to an abundance of tropical plants, palm trees and a lily pond. “Birds and insects sang and buzzed around the garden like a small orchestra,” says amanda d d on TripAdvisor.com. “This garden has had a great deal of hard work invested in it and it shows.”

End your day with a stroll in the market square of Grenada’s capital, St. George, where you will find vendors offering crafts, fresh fruit and vegetables and, of course, mounds of spices.
