Dream escape: Key West
Sun-kissed sand, sparkling blue waters and warm breezes are what await you on this island paradise
Located at the southernmost tip of the beautiful Florida Keys is the picturesque island of
Key West. Known for its 10 stunning beaches and the third-largest barrier reef in the world, this four-mile-long paradise also boasts perfect temperatures year-round, friendly locals that call themselves “Conchs” and dozens of galleries, gardens and museums.
Start your getaway by unwinding on the beach at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park ($7 entrance fee for two people). “You can walk the wooded nature trails, bike along the shaded paths or just sit and bask in all the sunshine along the water,” says a reviewer from Delaware. “You can also buy food from the beachfront grill called the Cayo Hueso Café and take a tour of Fort Zachary Taylor to learn about local history and see some cannons used during the Civil War.”
To catch a glimpse of the Keys’ local marine animals, head to Higgs Beach to snorkel the crystal-clear waters. Says a reviewer from Iowa, “We could see all kinds of sea life: barracuda, striped fish, conch and crabs!”
After toweling off, pay a visit to the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum to tour the house where the author spent 10 years of his life. “The home, gardens and writing studio are all well-maintained,” says a reviewer from Maine. “There are also more than 50 cats on-site that are descended from Hemingway’s white six-toed cat, which he believed brought him good luck.”
End your day at Mallory Square, where you’ll find vendors, street performers and a prime spot to watch the sunset. Says indyslf on TripAdvisor.com, “It can be a bit crowded, but worth it to see such a beautiful sky and to hear people applaud the sunset!”
Great day trip:
Marathon
Hop in the car for a scenic one-hour drive north to the community of Marathon, also known as the “Heart of the Florida Keys.” Once there, see the loggerhead turtles at Coco Plum Beach or the dolphins and sea lions at the Dolphin Research Center. Then kick back on Sunset Park Beach, take a kayak tour through the mangroves or explore a historical nature preserve.
Don’t miss:
Key West Lobsterfest
From August 9 to 12, enjoy lobsterthemed brunches and boils at various restaurant locations around the island. On August 11, visit the fair on Duval street for crafts, merchandise, a free concert and of course, lots of delicious fresh lobster!
