Antibiotics increase the risk of kidney stones by 133%
The occurrence of kidney stones has jumped 70% since the 1970s, and research at the University of Pennsylvania shows antibiotics may be a cause. In a review of data from 13.8 million people, using five common antibiotics increased the risk of stones by up to 133%. The authors posit that antibiotics cause changes in the microbiome that allow kidney stones to form. Their advice: If your doctor suggests antibiotics, ask if they’re truly necessary.
