The best treat of all
“I handed my 5-year-old grandson, Wes, a mug of hot cocoa as he lay on the couch in his dragon costume watching his favorite movie. With my daughter working Halloween night, I’d offered to take him trick-or-treating, but he’d come down with a fever and sadly had to miss out on the fun.
“That evening, my doorbell rang constantly as I doled out candy, Wes watching somberly from the sofa. Suddenly, a boy dressed as Spider-Man spotted him. ‘Why isn’t he trick-or-treating?’ he asked, and I explained that he wasn’t feeling well.
“An hour later, I opened the door and there stood Spider-Man again, holding a bag full of candy. ‘Please give this to him—feel better!’ the boy called as he raced away. As I closed the door, amazed at such kindness, Wes sat up with a smile.
“‘Wow, he did all that for me?’ he exclaimed. ‘Of course!’ I beamed. ‘Superheroes always save the day!’ ” —Sue Tork, 48, Charleston, WV
